Belonging to the tiny Cimicidae family, bed bugs are parasitic, nocturnal, blood-sucking insects. Bed bugs tend to be around one-quarter of an inch in size to hide from predators. In regards to the colors of bed bugs, it can range from a pale yellow-brown to heavily dark brown, nearing almost completely black. These colors can change throughout a bed bug’s life span though depending on multiple factors such as their sex, age, and recent food intake.

While knowing how to identify a single bed bug is a step in the right direction, also being aware of how to detect an infestation in your home is just as important. Other than physically spotting a group of bed bugs, here are some common warning signs of a possible bed bug infestation:

  • Small, jagged-edged stains on furniture that resemble a dark spot. These spots, which are commonly mixed up with leaky pens or markets, are a production of bed bugs getting crushed or defecating.
  • Foul-smelling odors that are not common or unusual, sometimes being described as “musty” or “sweet” and very similar to different kinds of food.

Many people experience bed bug bites differently. The bites can lead to physical reactions ranging from no response to extremely severe. Bed bugs commonly swell up, which creates small, pinkish welts on your skin. These welts can be severely itchy and lead to skin irritation. In some cases, the bite marks can leave painful blisters, making rapid treatment harder.

The problem arises comparing bed bug bites to other insect bites. They usually get confused with spiders and mosquitoes, which can lead to a delay in realizing that there is even an infestation. After confirming a bed bug infestation, it is important to get diagnosed right away. This will help you acquire the appropriate treatment sooner and to help combat any infestation right away.

In many individuals, bed bug bites do not pose and long term serious health issues. There are some out there though that are highly susceptible to bed bug bites, which increases that danger and can possibly lead to the worst-case scenario, death.

For example, there are some individuals that are sensitive to the proteins in bed bugs saliva called antigens. These antigens usually get injected into the victim when the bed bug bites them during the feeding. This sensitivity can cause serious allergic reactions in your body leading to what is called anaphylaxis. This condition is more typically associated with bee stings but can occur with bed bugs as well. A person who may be experiencing anaphylaxis may show symptoms such as vomiting, facial sweating, respiratory problems, confusion, and weakness in the body. The worst-case scenario of anaphylaxis is shock and death. The symptoms can progress rapidly without swift medical intervention.

Bed bug bites can also increase the risk of bacterial skin infections. The bites themselves don’t cause the issue though, it comes from the excessive itching the bites received by the bed bugs. If the victims pick at or scratch the skin too roughly, they can create entry points for harmful bacteria. There are many bacterial infections that can be linked to bed bug bites, such as cellulitis, impetigo, ecthyma, and lymphangitis.
