I Found Bed Bugs In My Hotel Now What? Lawyer Explains

Transcript is below, with edits:

Hi, this is Dan Whitney with the Whitney Law Firm here in Towson, Maryland. If you found this video, you’re probably wondering, I found bed bugs in my hotel now what? So I have given many people advice on this situation because I’m an attorney who’s handled a lot of bedbug cases over the last 10 years, we’ve recovered over $13 million for our clients in bedbug cases. So whenever somebody finds bed bugs in the hotel and they’re thinking, okay, what should I do now first make sure that everybody in the room is safe. If you’ve got kids in the room or family in the room, you want to get them out and get them to a safe room.

Preserve Evidence of the Infestation

Once you’ve sort of taken care of the immediate issues the next step is going to be, if you’re thinking about potential compensation and thinking about down the road, what you’re going to want to do is absolutely make sure that you are able to save and preserve some sort of evidence of the infestation. That’s usually take photographs or videos of the bugs, or catch them in a cup or a Ziploc bag or something and keep that. And then now you’ve got the evidence that, yes, in fact, there was an infestation in that room, that will be very helpful down the road to proving the infestation of course. So after that, you get your evidence and then you of course, want to take photographs or videos of any bites that anybody has sustained. If anybody needs any medical treatment, certainly go get that, probably the sooner the better to make sure you get relief as quickly as possible.

Pursuing Compensation Yourself or With a Lawyer?

And after that, as far as recovering compensation, what you can do is either make a go at it yourself and contact the hotel and chances will be you will probably be ignored, or if you’re not ignored you’ll probably get a significant low-ball offer, maybe a couple hundred, maybe a few thousand dollars, depending on the facts of the case.

Now, if you’re interested in maximizing the value of a bedbug incident that you had to suffer at a hotel, then what you should do is reach out to an experienced attorney who’s handled a lot of these cases, who’s able to handle your case in the state where it is and speak with them about what is my bedbug case worth. Because of course, as with most things, if you file a lawsuit or you retain an experienced attorney, the value of your claim is going to maximize and maximize significantly.

We’ve had more than a few cases where the offer might be a couple hundred or a couple thousand dollars, and we’ve recovered over 50 times that, it doesn’t always happen, but it certainly does happen sometimes. 50 times, even a hundred times, depending on how bad the low ball was and how good the facts were and what we’re able to do to maximize the case. So it all just really, of course, depends on the facts of the particular case. But really once you preserve all the evidence, it’s really time to reach out to an attorney to maximize the value. And then you go down the road of developing your claim and pursuing the litigation process if that’s what happened. So that’s really what you would do.
